What is wall wrap and what is it used for?

What is wall wrap? It is the insulation that wraps around the outside of the home and it is also commonly referred to as Sisalation.

You’ve probably seen it hundreds of times before without realising what it is. If you’ve ever driven past a building site and seen a reflective material wrapped around the outside of the building, this is the wall wrap. It acts as the first line of defence against the elements.

It differs from brand to brand, but most wall wraps are made from a tear-resistant woven polymer and laminated by a reflective aluminium foil. They are lightweight, flexible, and very durable. Foil wall wrap provides a radiant barrier between a hot surface and the area on the other side – e.g. between the exterior brick walls of a home and the internal walls and adjoining living areas.

Wall wrap is installed for a number of reasons, the main one being to help increase the thermal properties of the building. When installed properly, foil insulation will decrease the amount of radiant heat moving through the walls and into the building, which will then work in preserving the overall temperature inside the home to be stable and comfortable. Sisalation acts as an effective secondary skin to your home or building to minimise draughts, therefore allowing bulk wall insulation to perform more effectively.

When installing the wall wrap, it is important to note that the reflective, shiny side of the wrap must face the inside of the home. This is what keeps the heat in and allows the thermal properties of the material to work.
